Whereas, Public transportation is essential for blind persons to lead successful and productive lives;
Whereas, Capital Metro is the Austin area provider of the public transportation system, offering fixed routes, subsidized fairs through the purchase of a disability fair card, and a door to door service known as Metro Access for people with disabilities;
Whereas, blindness is deemed a disability outlined by the ADA, allowing blind individuals the responsible choice to utilize or refuse these services;
Whereas, the majority of the membership of the NFB of Texas Austin Chapter are avid participants of this variety of Capital Metro services;
Whereas, Disabled individuals have reported numerous concerns and problems with the existing transportation options; and
Whereas, Capital Metro policy and procedures are a vested interest of the blind of this community:
Therefore,Be it resolved this 27th day of February 2010 organized at this chapter meeting assembled in the city of Austin Texas that the NFB of Austin Chapter advocate for a accountable, dependable and reliable public transportation system which respects the autonomy of all passengers; and
Be it further resolved that this chapter join the combined efforts of the Austin public transportation movement to create the best possible public transportation system for all Austin citizens.
